NEEDED: GREAT HOMETOWN SHOTS TO PRINT ON POSTERS
By Heather Robson in Boise, ID

Listen up, photographers... here's an exciting opportunity to get your hometown photos published and displayed in eight regions around the country. Plus if you're the grand-prize winner, you get a trip to Iceland (a country so blessed with mesmerizing landscapes that you won't be able to put your camera down).

Staples, the office-supply store, is looking for a few good "hometown"
photos it can turn into posters and sell in its stores.

Launched January 1, 2007, this contest invites amateur photographers to submit pictures that show off the places where they live.

Now, we've talked many times in these pages about the wisdom of shooting and selling locally. Our resident photography expert, Rich Wagner, swears by hometown photos. In fact, he's built quite a business around them. Rich sells photographs of his hometown for $400-$700 a piece. And he uses the proceeds to fund his travels.

Shooting locally is a smart tack to take because local shots sell locally. Plus you can easily turn shots you take near home into stock photos for sale, too. And now, with this contest, you have a third incentive to try your hand at capturing images of the town you live in.

March 15 is the closing date for this contest Staples is running.

All you have to do is submit your photo online at...

http://www.staples.com/HometownViews and include a 15-word caption to go along with your photo.

You're being asked to capture something about your hometown that you like, or are proud of... so let your caption reflect that.

Staples will pick 40 finalists and then print posters from those photos to sell in each finalist's hometown and surrounding region.

It's possible to earn a little money, too, as all the finalists get royalties from their own poster's sale as part of their prize. Each poster sold will earn the photographer a $1 royalty... up to a total of $5,000 per photographer!

Plus each finalist walks away with a $100 Staples gift card.

Plus, even if your shot is not chosen as one of the 40 finalists, you'll still receive a coupon to print a color 12 x 18 poster of it -- free.

All 40 finalists -- and the grand-prize winner -- will be announced in May 2007. The grand-prize winning photo likely will be sold in all Staples stores nationwide... that's 1,300 stores in all!

So, spend some time this week considering what it is about your hometown that you love and would like to show other people. You never know... your hometown could be coming to a store near you!

Good luck.
