AFFLUENT, ADVENTURESOME, CONSCIENTIOUS READERS FOUND HERE

California... Mexico... Bali... those are the destinations where Broughton Hospitality manages its collection of chic boutique hotels. Naturally, those are the places the editors tend to focus on in Broughton Quarterly, the firm's glossy magazine.
Rich with photos and interesting articles, this publication is aimed at a readership of travel-industry professionals and past guests.
The audience is affluent, and while readers look for comfortable, even luxurious travel, they also (according to the Writer's Guidelines) "share a common appreciation for 'outside-the-box' travel experiences."
The editors continue: "We've geared our magazine toward conscientious travel, focusing on meaningful journeys..."
You'll have more luck selling an article with a specific and unique angle than you will one that offers a general overview. For example, a recent issue includes "On the Olive Oil Trail," about olive oil touring and tasting in Santa Barbara. And I found a profile of northern California's Safari West, positioned as a way for families to taste...

the African bush without the jetlag. Neither is a standard-issue, general readership piece on what to do. Instead, both stories suggest to the reader an interesting way to experience the place.
Other articles focus on intriguing tours, for instance. There's one in the Winter 2006 issue called "Riders on the Storm," about tours to India with Relief Riders International.
(So while most of the destination pieces serve to "plug" the firm's hotels, by recommending travel nearby, not all of them do.)
In addition to features of 1200-2000 words, you'll also find in Broughton Quarterly various departments where blurbs run to about 400 words -- restaurant reviews and gear suggestions, primarily.
The guidelines suggest that you send a query outlining your article idea and telling the editors something about your qualifications as a writer. They encourage you to send along writing samples as well (preferably published clips).
But that's not absolutely necessary. They'll also consider full manuscripts on spec (pasted into the body of your email, not attached).
