Get Off-The-Beaten-Track in Europe to Your Next By-Line
By Leigh Fergus in Paris, France
As editor of The European I'm looking for short, snappy, focused articles of no more than 350-600 words on one particular aspect of European living.
While I accept travel articles, I tend to give preference to pieces that deal with concrete and practical issues of living and doing business in Europe, such as:
** real estate in a specific town or small region
** the process of buying or renovating property in a specific European country
** renting property
** the cost of living
** registering a car
Examples of possible topics that would catch my eye are:
The Five Best Fish Restaurants in Nice
Ten Golden Rules for Renting Out Your Property in Greece
How to Make Your Money Go Further in Rome
Where to Find the Best Plumber/Electrician/Builder in southern Spain
Mother's Little Helpers in Munich (support groups etc.)
I also give preference to articles covering these aspects in off-the-beaten track areas in Europe. I don't need lots of articles about touristy Paris, for example, but I am interested in knowing more about a great historic walking tour you took while in the City of Light, etc.
Russia can be included in the editorial view of "Europe," which is not limited to members of the European Union.
For the best chance of getting published, you should...

Turn Treasure-Hunting into a $100,000 a Year Business
''Cobblestone streets lined with pastel colored adobe houses... Like a treasure hunter, I felt that a look beyond the surface of this dusty pueblo would yield some hidden gems. I wasn't disappointed: the pottery and talent I found was truly overwhelming.''
Reece Guth started working with the artists he discovered in this little Nicaraguan town, importing their pottery back to America. It soon became a $100,000-a-year business.
Wouldn't you like to meet Reece and his potters for yourself... and discover exactly how you, too, can weave travel and treasure-hunting into a lucrative business? Join us in Nicaragua this July for IL's annual Import-Export workshop, and you will.

add sidebars of contact details/ addresses/ useful facts and figures -- these need not be included in the word count but should not be longer than the article.
One or two well-chosen color photos with captions, in jpeg format, are also welcome and full acknowledgement will be given for any photos used.
The European works on spec, and publication depends on editorial approval. Send your submissions in a Word document via e-mail. If I accept an article, you get a by-line and a fee of $50 will be paid the month after publication.
Writers should contact me, Leigh Fergus, directly by email at lfergus@internationalliving.com for a copy of our style sheet and guidelines.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Jen Stevens will be talking about these "postcard" pieces in Paris at our workshop there in a couple of weeks. She'll show attendees exactly how to define them, write them, and pitch them to editors.
Plus, you can hear from Leigh Fergus -- editor of The European -- directly, as she'll be speaking to the workshop attendees about her editorial needs, what she really loves in an article, and what drives her batty, too.
So for the real inside track to a by-line in The European, join us at The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop in Paris, May 16-19. You'll find all the details here: http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com/tww/paris2007/ ]
