Your Feline Fancy Could Earn You a By-line at This Magazine
By Roberta Beach Jacobson in Karpathos, Greece
I Love Cats is a bi-monthly print publication. The editor, Lisa Allmendinger, is currently accepting queries and completed stories.
The types of stories that will resonate with her are those involving cats and their owners. If you can spin an interesting tale about odd situations involving cats, then this is the market for you. The editor is also interested in filler pieces, which can include helpful tips for cat owners as well as cat health and behavioral issues.
One type of cat story that will meet with the editor's disapproval is writing about outdoor and feral cats. This publication's focus is strictly on house cats. You'll find full Writer's Guidelines here: http://www.iluvcats.com/writguid.html.
I Love Cats buys all rights to your story and it is a paying market. The editor likes a story...

to run between 500-800 words and the pay is from $25 - $50. Filler pieces can be shorter and pay $25 per piece. Payment is made upon publication.
To have a better chance at getting your story published, you should submit photos with your article. Remember to keep the focus of your photos the cat. This is particularly true if you wish to have your photo considered for the front cover.
For cover shots, you should send only vertical photographs of at least 8" X 10". The style of photos that are chosen for the cover must "beg the reader to 'pet' the cover". It's OK to have a prop in your photo, so long as the picture focuses on the cat. You'll find the photo guidelines here: http://iluvcats.com/photguid.html.
I've been a regular contributor to I Love Cats since 1998. In years past, they only accepted queries and articles by snail-mail. But I'm glad to report they now prefer email submissions.
I Love Cats is sold only via subscription, but there is a single sample issue available at:
