Dear Reader,
I want to redesign our website.
We actually have two websites: http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com and http://www.thephotographerslife.com and I'd like to combine them into one.
That's where you come in...
I need to buy a URL and come up with a website name that says "fun." And I'm hoping you can help.
You see, we've called ourselves the Travel Division (of AWAI) for so long it's hard for me to think of us any other way.
But the truth is, we're not really a travel division anymore. At least, not since we started publishing programs on pet photography that don't require travel. And soon we'll be talking about food writing, which may or may not include travel. And we have some other, not-necessarily-travel-related ideas we're tossing around, too.
But the one thing that all our current (and in-the-works) programs have in common is, well, "fun."
They offer you ways to enjoy yourself, live well, learn something, foster your interests, maybe pick up a few new passions along the way -- and even get paid for it, too. And, as I said… they're just plain fun.
Some of our photo workshop attendees admit that they use our workshops as a travel club, more than anything else. Sure, they take a lot of pictures when they're there and they learn how to sell them when they're there, too. But they also like the idea of traveling with a group of people who share their interests. They make new friends. They have fun.
And sure... while it is certainly nice to get paid for the travel articles you write, some of our readers admit that they really like travel writing because it gives them an excuse to travel. When you travel as a travel writer, you see the world in a totally different light than when you travel as a tourist. It's just plain fun.
So -- with that in mind -- will you help me come up with a name for our new website?
Something that says "fun." Something that reflects the idea that "living richer" doesn't necessarily mean making more money. It's about enjoying life more. After all, people don't lie on their deathbeds and say they wish they'd spent more time at work.
Everyone could use a little more fun in their lives. And we'd like to help put it there -- whether it's through travel or pet photography or food writing or just simply traveling the world with friends (see today's writing prompt).
So if you can help me think of a name, I'll gladly repay you in free reports.
And I'll start today with our first of many to come: 101 Things You Can Get Paid to Photograph In and Around Your Hometown.
I'll include download instructions here below.
And, to be honest, you're welcome to read that report -- even if you don't send me your ideas. But I'd greatly appreciate it if you would...
In fact, I'll even give you credit for naming the site by putting your picture and a special thank you on the site for the first month it's live.
Deal?
Here's where you can download the pre-press report: http://www.thephotographerslife.com/101_Get_Paid_To_Photograph/index.php
And don't forget to scroll down for today's writing prompt.
If you have an idea for a website name you can either reply to this eletter or send me a note at lori@thetravelwriterslife.com.
Thanks in advance. Have a great weekend!
Lori Allen
Director, AWAI's Travel Division

PRACTICAL WRITING PROMPT OF THE WEEK: Buddy Travel
In this month's Budget Travel magazine, editor, Erik Torkells, identifies a trend in travel: More people than ever are traveling to be with friends and to mark special occasions like birthdays and weddings.
He points out that these days, travel is often as much -- if not more -- about spending time with the people we than it is about exploring a destination.
Think about the last few trips you've taken -- near or far -- and who you went with. Did you travel to celebrate an occasion? Or to spend quality time with family and friends?
Think about ways you could cast your story as a primer for somebody who might like to do either of those things. You could write a place up as the "perfect anniversary getaway" or a "great birthday escape."
Or, consider the traveling companions who might best appreciate the itinerary you'd suggest -- girlfriends stealing a few days away from kids; old college buddies getting together for a week; mother-daughter duos traveling together; multi-generational family trips that include grandparents, parents, and kids...

READER FEEDBACK:
Hi Lori,
I thought I would let you know that I followed up with Airborne Quarterly as recommended by Roy Stevenson in last week's featured publication. Actually I had a piece roughed up from a recent trip to San Antonio to see my son graduate from Air Force boot camp.
I decided to submit it to Colonel Weber, after a few tweaks to accommodate the submission guidelines. He liked it, and I will be in the Spring (March) issue, my first official publication! Thank you for all your help and I hope this is the start of a trend for me.
