On one side, folks argue that if you're stranded at an airport for any reason other than weather, you can ask your airline to invoke Rule 240, which states that they'll fly you on the next available flight (whether that flight is through their airline or another).
On the other side, however, airline employees, reporters, and the mainstream press argue that Rule 240 is non-existent. It disappeared years ago. And, if you try to use it today, no one will know what you're talking about.
Yet, I've found bloggers who claim to have used Rule 240 to get out of a bind as recently as last year.
So, does Rule 240 really exist? Maybe not.
But, will I try it the next time I'm stranded at an airport? Absolutely. What's the harm, right? Worst-case scenario, I'll still be stranded in the same airport I was before I asked.

P.S. As with asking any favor, a polite manner goes a long way. If, after a smile and a few pleases and thank-yous, you're still stranded, why not take the time to write a short article? Your idea could be as simple as where to find the best airport margarita... or three things to do with three hours to spare in the Atlanta airport.
You could pitch your stories to airline in-flight magazines - and maybe earn some cash from your overtime at the airport. It's easier than you may think, and you can get started with our Breaking into Airline In-Flight Magazines for just $2.95 here: http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com/ifm/295b.
