ORION MAGAZINE

Orion was founded in 1982. Since then, its focal point has been nature writing. But while nature and environment issues remain its main focus, the magazine has evolved into a larger, wider-reaching publication. Today, topics range from people and places to stories and memoirs to our favorite topic as of late... food.
Not your typical food writing, mind you. But travel and food writing skills definitely apply here. Take a look through the "Food & Agriculture" section and you'll see straight travel stories, like "The Tortilla Cycle," about corn tortillas in Guatemala, and more food-centric articles like "Burgers a la Thomas Jefferson," about the man who runs a famous local-food-only diner in Vermont.
Anything with a food, cultural, travel, or environmental theme should apply here. Plus, if your story is published in Orion, you get double the benefit... not only do you get paid- anywhere from $50 to $1,000, depending on article type and length - but you'll also know your article is helping do good in the environment and in the world.
Orion is published bimonthly. It publishes stories in different categories, including "Features," ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 words, and "Departments" from 350 to 1,200 words. It purchases first North American serial rights, as well as exclusive worldwide electronic rights for 60 days and non-exclusive permanent web rights for its electronic archive.
Orion welcomes articles from freelancers. They're looking for well-constructed submissions on the relationships of nature and culture and of people and place. The editors want fresh material that stands out from other publications. They seek new and unusual approaches to everyday stories or things. And, whatever topic you choose when you decide to write for Orion, always keep ecology in mind. It's the central theme of the magazine.
As always, it's best to read previous issues before approaching the editors with queries.
Orion magazine discourages e-mail queries. Instead, the editors prefer that you send your story or query printed out (double spaced) by mail. Don't forget to include a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope).
Include your name and a page number on each page of your submission. To send your previous clips (and the writer's guidelines suggest that you do), you can include a printed copy, or simply type out web links to any published stories you have online.
