SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE MAGAZINE

The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine is a twice-monthly publication that goes out with the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, the largest newspaper in Northern California. At first glance, the stories on the magazine’s website seem to cover a hodgepodge of topics. They range from restaurant reviews to breast cancer information to a story about an antiques dealer. But they all have two things in common: they focus solely on the Bay Area, and they tell the story behind the story.
For example, in an article about a new Bay Area resort opening up this summer, we learn how the author met the resort owner in Fiji... and how he turned an old National Park Service lodge into a boutique hotel, “saving” it from giants like Marriott and Hilton, and turning it into an ecotourism destination.
Chronicle Magazine’s writer’s guidelines claim that they aren’t very strict... but they do stress that you should familiarize yourself with The Chronicle before submitting a story. You can check the archives on the website to make sure you’re not writing on a topic they’ve already covered.
Editors at Chronicle Magazine are looking for “general interest” articles about people and things in the Bay Area, but not articles about events or breaking news.
If the guidelines aren’t very clear about content, they aren’t very clear about pay, either. “Rates vary by individual...” state the guidelines, so when you...
