SUNSET MAGAZINE

If you’ve ever lived in the Western United States, you probably know Sunset Magazine. It’s colorful, glossy, and full of stories and photos of picturesque homes and gardens across the West.
But did you know that Sunset Magazine has an active travel and food section, and they’re looking for freelancers to fill it up?
Turns out, while the rest of the magazine is largely staff-written, the travel and food sections are written mostly by freelancers.
Their writer’s guidelines say…

“We're looking for “take-action” travel ideas within our coverage area that will appeal to a large, general interest audience (70 percent women) that is time challenged, appreciates value, and is more likely to live in the suburbs than San Francisco, Seattle, or Los Angeles. (In other words, we're not a city magazine.)
“We don't do a lot of vertical subject stories that only appeal to a narrow audience; we like destinations that offer multiple experiences. Our readers are active, but more into “soft” adventures.”

Keep in mind, though that this magazine is very prolific in its coverage. And its staff writers are great.
If you want to get published here, you’d better check out at least a year’s worth of back issues before you pitch a story idea. If they’ve covered it in the last year, they won’t feature it again, and you’ll likely lose credibility just for asking. (Their guidelines clearly state they don’t cover topics they’ve already covered before.)
Sunset Magazine is a good read, though. So flipping through a year’s worth of back issues will be a pleasure.
