FOOD, FREEDOM, AND FUN FOR THE FIFTY AND OVER
By Bonnie Caton in Portland, Oregon

"Freeloading" in France, volunteering in Costa Rica, embarking on a solo trip to India...  rock and roll camps, kite boarding, and more...

What is this, some young and restless travel e-magazine?  Nope.  It's AARP.  And it makes being 50 and over look... well, pretty darn sweet.  I'm sitting here reading it, wishing it were my turn to retire.

If you're part of the freewheeling 50-plus crowd, and you're ready to write about your travel and food adventures, here's the hip place to do it... and make some good money at it, too.  If your article is accepted, pay starts at $1 per word.

AARP Magazine's writer's guidelines are pretty sparse when it comes to details about what they're looking for in a story, so you'd do best to familiarize yourself with the magazine.  Get a real feel for its style by reading at least a half-dozen back issues before submitting anything.

To contribute, send a captivating query letter including samples of your past writing, as well as what your piece would be about, and how it would fit into the magazine, all the while giving the editors a taste of your writing style.  Do NOT include your story in the query or by attachment.  The editors will let you know if they want to see it.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: If you need help crafting a good query letter, you'll find sample letters you can model inside The Ultimate Travel Writer's Program, here: http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com/twr/fin ]

A few travel-related magazine departments you could consider writing for at AARP include: travel, food, health, and general interest.

Send queries, via snail mail, to:

AARP The Magazine

Or email to: member@aarp.org

Again, don't include your story with your query letter.
