GLOSSY BY-LINE, BIG CHECKS AT THIS BRITISH MAGAZINE

Stories in Traveller magazine span the globe from Croatia to Ethiopia, Hanoi to Rio. Each issue covers an impressive, far-flung variety of destinations.

But you don't have to know the far reaches of the world to land a by-line in this quarterly British magazine. If you can rustle up a culturally rich story about your own home town and some intriguing photos to illustrate it, consider submitting it here.

The wait can be long (it sometimes takes months to hear back from the editors since they're only making final editorial decisions four times a year) but the pay is nice. You'll make 200 British pounds -- or about $400 -- per 1,000 words.

While newspaper travel sections are moving in their coverage toward a more how-to approach to travel, Traveller wants first-person narratives based on your personal experience in a destination.

Traveller accepts both queries with clips and finished articles with photos. The editors suggest that if you don't have any examples of previously published pieces to show them, you should simply send your completed story in.

You can submit your stories and photos either by email (photos in this format should be low-res digital jpegs) or by post (with your photographs as color slides).
