HANDSOME REWARD FOR QUIRKINESS, EUROPEAN SAVVY

“We are not just another travel magazine,” insist the writer’s guidelines for Hidden Europe Magazine, a British print and online travel mag. And it’s clear that the stories in the magazine, of forgotten places, unusual customs, and other European eccentricities, are far from the mainstream round-ups, “charticles,” or list articles so popular with the likes of Budget Travel or Conde Nast.
Hidden Europe aims to avoid mainstream destinations like Rome’s Coliseum or the Champs Elysées. Instead, it favors articles like “Angouleme - murs peints,” which profiles a tiny forgotten French town dedicated to the art of the comic strip... or "The search for Franklin," a story of clairvoyants, mediums, and spiritualists on the lookout for the lost British explorer Sir John Franklin.
The magazine’s unique twist on European travel is just one reason why it’s an ideal place for readers of The Right Way to Travel to get published.
Another, perhaps even more appealing, reason is that Hidden Europe pays up to 200 euros (or about $255) for a first-time feature-length article... and you don’t have to be an experienced writer to break in.
In fact, the Writer’s Guidelines clearly invite new writers, saying, “We certainly do not expect that those who write for us are already established writers. Of course we warmly welcome submissions from those with a long list of published credits to their name, but we know all too well there are many people who have travelled enormously, really have a feel for some aspect of European culture or society, and who would love to see one or two of their pieces in print.”
That being said, before you start writing a story for Hidden Europe, make sure you read through the site thoroughly and even order and read a few print issues, first. And, of course, read through the entire Writer’s Guidelines.
Then, pull together:
** Three samples of your writing, published or unpublished, to give an idea of your style
** The article you’d like to submit (about 1,500 words)
** Where in the magazine your article will best fit
** Any other story ideas you have
** Photos and/or illustrations that go with the story
Once you have all of the above parts in place, email them to: editors@hiddeneurope.co.uk .
** TIP: Notice that the language quoted from the Hidden Europe site, above, uses British spelling and word choice (like “travelled” instead of “traveled”). It’s important to write your article in the style of the publication you’re targeting, and that means considering which country it’s in. You’ll find a list of words and spellings to use when you’re writing for British publication in “The Foreign Market Shortcut: How to Write Less and Double Your Sales,” by freelance writer Steenie Harvey.
