THE WORLD AND I ONLINE: GET PAID TO TELL KIDS ABOUT THE WORLD

The World and I Online is a unique place for students, teachers, parents, and individuals to expand their knowledge of cultures around the world. It started out in 1986 as a print publication, but is now an online multi-media database and monthly issue.

Four unique websites operate under the umbrella of The World and I Online: The World and I, World and I Journal, World and I Home School, and World and I School.

World and I School, tailored to K-12 school curriculums, is the largest with one million subscribers. You don’t need to worry about writing your articles with this audience in mind, however, as the site aims to appeal to the general reader and educated adults, as well as students.

Articles are available on almost any topic imaginable ranging from history to the arts, from science to literature -- and there is a huge emphasis on travel. With more than 100 countries already in the Global Culture Studies section of the site, The World and I Online is still looking to expand the number of articles and countries represented.

Editor Steve Osmond mentions that he’s looking for first-person travel or adventure, food, or lifestyle stories. (Of course, stay away from anything too controversial, as the majority of the audience is made up of young students.)

Steve is also looking for arts, music, and social/cultural articles from any and every country.

You won’t want to submit any stories on previously covered topics, so make sure to review the public areas of the site, especially the e-library, which contains titles from their database of articles. Paying attention to the topics covered in these articles, you’ll also get a better idea of what might appeal to readers.

You should also check out the Global Culture Studies page. You’ll find it by selecting a country from the drop-down bar in the middle of the homepage.

Monthly issues usually fill up two to three months in advance, and payment is $100 for any article accepted for publication. Limit your article length to about 1,500 words, and send at least one accompanying photo -- though more are always appreciated.
