Dear Reader,

Yesterday, we heard from Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop attendee, Tamara O’Dell, on how she found success writing for a small, regional magazine near her home in Colorado Springs, CO. Today, for this week’s Featured Publication, I asked Tamara to give us some more details about what it takes to get published in that magazine.

Keep an eye out for publications like this in your area. Glossy regional magazines are an ideal place to start if you want to get into travel writing.
More details below…

ALEGRIA LIVING MAGAZINE
By Tamara O’Dell in Colorado Springs, CO

Published quarterly, Alegria Living is a beautiful full-color glossy magazine that covers Southern Colorado. It’s a paid subscription magazine that you’ll also find in doctors’ and dentists’ offices, hair salons, the Chamber of Commerce offices, and other public outlets. The primary target audience is Colorado residents and visitors over 35 years of age who are college educated, and own their own homes.

“Alegria” means joyful or jubilation in Spanish and Portuguese. The title fits this feel-good magazine, whose primary focus is to feature stories that will make the reader smile.

Every Algeria Living issue includes regional history articles, food stories and recipes, outdoor recreation, and stories about people who are making a difference in their community through their hobbies, businesses, or lifestyle.

Since Colorado Springs is home to Ft. Carson Army Base and three other military installations, the magazine also features a column called “Deployment Diaries,” written by several Army wives.

The publisher and owner of Alegria Living, Cinnamon Lynn, grew up in Salida, CO and is very active in the three counties Alegria Living Magazine serves.  Because most of the local media outlets focus on negative news, she feels it is her personal mission to share the good things that are happening in local communities. Cinnamon is currently in the process of creating an online format of the magazine. If you would like to peruse past copies to see topics covered, go to www.alegrialivingonline.com. There you can also read Cinnamon’s blog and request a copy of the magazine.

If you have a story idea you would like to pitch, read through the magazine’s site first or request a sample copy before contacting Cinnamon with a specific story idea and a well-written pitch.

For Alegria, your article must be local and relevant to its Southern Colorado readers.

[TIP: Often the quickest way to break into smaller, regional magazines like this one is with short, “front-of-the-book” articles. They’re quick and easy to write, and they’ll likely get you published faster, building up your clip file, and earning your instant credibility.
