German Life (LaVale, Maryland) is a magazine full of photos. It needs solid reporting about German culture and travel (heavy on food and drink articles). But wait! You don't have to travel all the way to Germany to find a story idea for this print publication. Their August/September issue focuses on Oktoberfest and maybe there's such a festival held right in your neighborhood (these short features run 200 - 800 words).
 
Without a doubt, you'll need photos to get beyond fillers in this publication. You've got a variety of choices. You can send slides in sleeves or a photo CD by mail, or you can submit (300 dpi) electronically.
 
No matter if Oktoberfest-related or some other story idea, you must start with a query - just a few paragraphs. Editor Mark Slider will only answer if he is interested. He'll let you know exactly when your article is scheduled. Lively travel writing, not just the usual tourist destinations everybody talks about, runs up to 1200 words. German Life also uses book reviews of 250-300 words and fillers of 80 words.
 
They pay on publication, up to $500. We broke in with a short feature about an Illinois town founded by Germans and earned $200.
 
The best insider tip I can offer is the magazine also covers Austria and the German-speaking region of Switzerland. Most writers overlook this fact and miss the boat on potential sales.
