The Write Way to Travel

Dear Reader,

Often, the best way to break into a publication is by getting a short piece published in it first. You'll have more luck if you offer up a short piece of 150-400 words, targeted for a particular "department" in the publication, than you will if you try to pitch a 2,000-word story to an editor who's never heard of you before.

With that in mind, take a look at this week's Featured Publication and see if you can think of an article to pitch to any one of their regular departments.

If not, join us in Paris this May 24-27 and discover "la vraie Paris" for yourself. You'll surely find something to write about as we scour the city on our photo workshop: http://www.thephotographerslife.com/paris2006

Have a good weekend!

France Today

This colorful magazine is published 10 times a year in San Francisco, CA. They focus on a different geographical region of France in each issue. Regular departments (in their own words) include:

** Le Buzz -- The hottest new "it" spots: restaurants, galleries and venues, from fashionable to underground.

** Travel for the Experienced Traveler -- an in-depth look at la vraie France, with invaluable tips for experiencing the French countryside.

** Food & Wine -- The best of French gastronomy: Wine of the Month, bistrots, chefs, new culinary trends and more.

** Streets of Paris -- A savvy guide to Paris and the Parisians, from best libraries to cutting-edge artists who receive you in their homes.

** Escape From Paris -- Take a breather from the capital: fascinating places to visit just a short train ride away.

** My City Local -- Insider tips to France's major cities, their hot spots and hidden treasures.

Their interest is contemporary France only, not its history. You can get a glimpse of their coverage at www.francetoday.com

This publication bills itself as "The Journal of French Travel and Culture" and you should know they're big on interviews! I've never sold to them myself, but a freelance writer I know has chalked up two sales there. The person to query is Managing Editor Anne Senges (her e-mail is asenges@francetoday.com). While you're at it, why not sign up for their free newsletter (twice a month)?
