Get Paid to Be Pampered …
at Spas All Over the World!

Dear Reader,
I rarely plan much before a vacation. But whenever I hop in the car for a road trip or look for last-minute flights, I have one thing in the back of my mind: Spa-ing!
On my visit to Kauai – I found myself enjoying a 2-hour lomilomi massage (a traditional Hawaiian treatment) with two practitioners-- so four hands instead of two. That detail alone equaled pure bliss. But the treatment room itself was blissful – with French Doors that opened toward the ocean.
In Tuscany, I found myself at a spa where a tiny Spanish woman massaged honey all over my chest. She insisted it was good for elasticity.
Later that day, the spa manager guided me to the “Sleep Lounge.” I walked into a “pod” that uses light therapy to help aid in relaxation. I fell asleep inside a pink-lighted egg and woke up refreshed two hours later.

Over Christmas, I found myself wading through hot springs in the most unlikely place – a small, po-dunk town in Wyoming, that was, in the 1970’s, known as the “Healing Center of the West.”
And how can I forget the Chardonnay Wine Therapy Body Treatment – which began with a Chardonnay antioxidant body scrub to exfoliate my skin … and concluded with a deep massage using Chardonnay oil.
No matter my destination, my journey always leads to a pampering adventure … one I’m often enjoying at a discount (or even free) … and then getting paid to “talk” about.
Sometimes it’s in a place that has become an old favorite … sometimes I’m on a quest to find the best-kept secret spa off the radar of “Top 10 Spas” … and sometimes I’m simply enjoying an adventure in a new town, state or country.
For me, travel is the opportunity to indulge in spa treatments many people dream of.
… and then relay the blissful details to readers in the articles I write.
Turn Your Travels into Paid Spa Adventures
My name is Melissa Broughton. I’m one of AWAI’s travel writing instructors with, what I happen to think, is the best niche in the market – Spa Health writing!
I essentially get paid to be pampered … and you can, too!
You don’t have to be a licensed practitioner (such as an esthetician or massage therapist) to write about this market. You don’t have to know everything there is to know about the spa industry.
I didn’t have much experience or any credentials when I first started.
I didn’t need that to break in … and neither do you!
If (like me) you like to relax in steam rooms … get divine facials, massages and body treatments … experience new things when you travel … and want to learn the art of relaxation and wellness … then you can do this!
It’s simply a matter of learning a few easy secrets about reviewing and writing about spas. Secrets I’d like to give you.
You see, spa writing is a great way to land by-lines fast – especially if you’re open to “spa health.”
Secret # 1: A great way to break in with lightning speed and start getting paid to be pampered is to look not only at spa treatments … but spa health.
Now spa health includes pampering, no question … but it also expands your opportunities into the “holistic and wellness” arena – where there’s strong demand and lots of outlets for articles. That can mean more by-lines, better pay, and royal treatment all over the world.
Assignments in this area are a lot of fun. Often I’ve learned lessons about my own health, and I’ve enjoyed the scenery, quirks and characters along the way.

Like the time a spa review at Terme di Saturnia led me through incredibly winding roads through the countryside of Toscana. When I arrived, I was sick to my stomach from the ride. The spa manager walked me straight to a fountain where the water came from the natural hot springs (quite common at spas in Italy). She insisted I drink it, despite the sulfur smell. Only 10 minutes later, I felt like a woman who was being pampered in Italy again!

The Spa Lifestyle Is Almost Everywhere …
which Means Article Ideas Are All Around You
Getting paid to be pampered sounds nice anytime … but you should know:
You couldn’t ask for better timing. Even in an economy like ours, the spa industry is booming. And that means there’s lots of opportunity in this niche today!
Spas are popping up everywhere. And not just at resorts anymore … but now you find them in boutique hotels, too. There are skincare boutiques, day spas … and even bed and breakfasts are getting in on the act with spa services.
Enrollment in hospitality programs has increased, too. So has the enrollment in vocational programs for estheticians and massage therapists.
Why?
A contributing factor is the increased awareness people have of spa health and wellness.
Take for instance, the rise in interest of medical spas and medical treatments such as Botox, Dysport, fillers, lasers and chemical peels.
There’s also a greater awareness of parabens and other ingredients that may be harmful. This has created a whole new Organic Spa movement, which includes the building of greener spas and packaging of products.
What’s more, the looming dilemma of our health care system has left people seeking alternate means of healthcare. People want to learn the benefits of different types of massages and healing modalities.
More and more, the public is interested in healthy practices and in prevention. Readers want more information, recommendations, advice. And you could give it to them … and get paid to do it.
To put it plainly: If you’re not writing about spa health treatments, you’re missing out on one of the most rewarding travel writing niches right now.
Just think about all the publications devoted to Spas: Spa Magazine, Spa Finder, Organic Spa,
Skin Inc., American Spa, just to name a few. Then consider all of the Wellness type magazines that cover yoga, nutrition, alternative health, and psychology.
There are countless online blogs, directories, reviews, Facebook pages that promote spas and treatments daily, too!
And, spa health writing expands into markets that may surprise you (in a good way).
Take a look at this example.
It’s a picture of me taking a cooking class … at a spa … in Italy! Spa Cuisine is one of many surprising (and fun!) markets you can tap into. And that opens up possibilities in food magazines, too …
It All Happens at the Spa – from Drinking Tea …
to Cooking … to Admiring the Architecture …
And You Can Get Paid for Experiencing All of That!
Numerous markets exist within spa health writing. One vacation you may find yourself writing about nutrition. Another you could focus on apparel … or tea … exercise … medicine … even architecture and interior design.
Within this expansive, fun niche you have lots of options. Lots of opportunities to travel well, experience new things, and get paid to do it.
In a moment, I’ll show you how you can easily break into all these spa-health writing markets! But first, let me lay out the rest of the opportunity here. Because the story gets even bigger and better …
Opportunities exist locally, too.
You could stay near home and go to your favorite esthetician for your monthly facial – and write about it.
Think no one wants to hear about your local spa experience? Think again.
When the economy first turned sour, lots of new “local” services popped up all around the world to serve folks who, pinching pennies, were forgoing a trip abroad in favor of a little pampering at home.
Today, as you well know, the economy is hardly on its feet … and these close-to-home day spas are still doing a brisk business. There’s a wealth of opportunity here. Just think about how much fun it will be to go explore it!
Will Write for Free Travel!
Of course, being a spa connoisseur gives you a perfect excuse to travel abroad, too …
Just flip through the magazines at a book store. Many of them relate to spa health in some form or another. Topics include: detox … de-stressing … anti-aging … exercise and wellness … how to feel and look younger … and even how to simplify your life.
If you were to look at an editorial calendar for a newspaper or magazine, you could relate each topic to spa health: make-overs, exercise, winter escapes, summer escapes, romantic getaways, winter skin, sunburned skin, healthier choices, ways to combat stress and so forth.
The spa lifestyle can be incorporated anywhere, giving you boundless opportunities!
And the best part is – as a travel writer, you need to “spa” in order to write about spas and treatments. Editors want you to help the reader feel like packing their bags and going to the destination you’re writing about.
You can’t entice the reader properly unless you, yourself have sampled what it is you’re recommending …
Not a Writer? Not a problem.
Many spa-related write-ups can be quite short. And they’re easy to write once you know a few secrets.
For instance, the market is flooded with too many basic write-ups that use typical spa words such as “pampering,” “rejuvenating” and “mind, body, spirit.”.
Most new writers don’t know this but if you know the tricks to writing articles that have more character—if you know the little things to highlight and the specific words and ideas to focus on—you’ll already be one step ahead in an editors’ eyes.
It will also help you build your credibility in the spa-writing arena. And that will open the door to almost any spa experience you desire—anywhere in the world.
After that, to a large extent, it's just a matter of knowing the formulas, and the right words to use.
It becomes about “spa-ing” with the right mindset and knowing how to show an editor that you really DO know the simple techniques that will immediately – and positively – distinguish your reviews from the average reviews out there.
My point is: If you master a few simple secrets about spa reviewing – what to look for, what questions to ask, how to define different types of spa treatments … and you know the formulas for getting those ideas on paper– you’re going to have an instant leg up.
It’s a powerful, effective combination that can write your ticket to a world full of pampered travel. The world I live in.
And today – I’d like to invite you in.
How to Get Started – Fast and Easy
You don’t have to know anything about writing travel articles or reviewing spas to get started today.
I’m going to lay it all out for you and take you step-by-step through the process and everything you need to know in AWAI’s new program: The Pampered Traveler: How to Take Luxurious Trips and Turn Them into Paychecks.
You see, in my own quest for becoming the best spa writer I could be, I searched bookstores and libraries and all sorts of resources online and never did I find a program that really tells you how it’s done – how to take luxurious trips and turn them into paychecks.
So, I teamed up with AWAI to create the exact program I wanted when I first started out. A program that takes you through the process every step of the way in an easy-to understand, easy-to follow way.
Plus, I’m a licensed esthetician now. So I’ve added even more great resources to help you sound like a pro (even if you’re not).If I’m not indulging in a treatment for myself (relaxation) or for “work,” then I am consulting with a spa on the layout of a new treatment room or interviewing and training their staff.
And if you don’t find me relaxing while getting a facial or observing another facial being done, then most likely I am teaching skin physiology at my school – Santa Barbara Aesthetics Academy.
And if no one can find me, I am doing my favorite thing – writing … and thinking about my next spa trip to Italy!

I think that is something that any spa writer could do and I intent to follow her example.” – L. Wendt
“Melissa was very personable, knew her subject matter and had good experience.” – F. Burack

You might enjoy overnight accommodation at hotels (because many of the properties you’ll visit – whether it’s a resort spa or a boutique hotel – will have property managers who may want you to experience the spa and hotel).
That has happened to me more than once. For instance, I was asked to stay overnight at Le Sirenuse, a breathtakingly pretty boutique hotel located on the cliffs of Positano, Italy, with views and scenery along the Almalfi Coast. I was in town for the spa … but the amazing hotel stay was just an extra benefit … and it all came as a perk of my spa-writing adventure …
