Our Graduates Boast Extraordinary Successes
Tamara O’Dell attended our Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop in Santa Monica, CA and soon after the event published two travel articles about her hometown in Colorado. She says, "I simply did what Jen said … I followed her formula … and within a handful of weeks I'd landed two by-lines. They're in a glossy magazine and look great, and I really feel like I got a solid start, fast."
Connie Werner Reichert used what she learned at Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop to land multiple press trips and article bylines. She writes, “The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop gave me tremendous insight on what's happening right now in the real world of travel writing. Shortly after completing the program, I experienced 10 successful press trips within two years that resulted in a plethora of articles and a good income. I remain thankful for all AWAI has done for me and my career … I snowmobiled in the Yukon in 30 degrees below zero weather, took a crazy jeep drive in Sedona, enjoyed spa days in Mexico, and slept in a hammock in Hawaii. Ten trips was a killer…but it was incredible.”
The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop is also where Tim O'Rielly got his start. Before joining us, he'd never written an article in his life. But as a freelance photographer he has occasion to travel, and he was looking for a way to get more mileage (and more money) out of his journeys.
Two months after completing the Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop, Tim’s first full-length feature article about travels in the Mayan World appeared in Vision Magazine. Since then, he's written two more cover stories for that publication. He told me, "Your course really spurred me to take action and risk hearing a 'no' or a 'yes' from an editor."
Zenaida Des Aubris came to the Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop all the way from South Africa. I heard from her just recently when she sent me this note: “I am now in my 8th month of an around the world trip. I am doing my own blog, which, I am happy to report has a subscription of about 2000, plus I am writing for 2 German publications. All thanks to the impetus I received from the course.”
Following our Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop in New York, attendee Robin C. struck up a conversation with an employee of the Guggenheim Museum and ended up being invited inside to look around and to interview him. As a follow up, she's been invited back for grand openings, with VIP access to the artists. Within a handful of weeks after the workshop, she'd already sold an article.
And it took attendee Roy Stevenson just three months to earn back his workshop fee, land regular paid assignments and travel the world on someone else’s dime. Last year his big trips were in Europe, England and Alaska. This year, publications are paying him to visit and write about the Gulf Islands, Mardi Gras in Louisiana, Quebec and Montreal, Vienna, Stockholm, Singapore and Thailand. He now earns a full-time living as a travel writer with over 700 published articles in more than 160 different magazines, newspapers, in-flight magazines and online sites.
The success stories go on and on. But if there's any lesson to be learned from these folks, it's this: You don't need a degree in journalism or a mastery of the English language to become a travel writer. You don't need a fancy laptop or lots of money.
What you do need is an interest in seeing new places and meeting new people … and a willingness to learn the techniques, tricks, and secrets the pros rely on to write the kinds of stories that editors want … and land the amazing perks just sitting there waiting for you to grab them.
And this July 26-28, that's exactly what our team of professional writers and editors will show you at our 2012 Ultimate Travel Writing Workshop.
You Can Do This! Even if All You've Ever Written
is a Postcard Home to Your Friends …
You can do this … even if all you've ever done is scribble a postcard home. We'll show you exactly what you need to know. It's simple. And you're going to find it not only enjoyable … but exciting, too.
Now, you could travel and write full-time if you wanted to. But you certainly don't have to make that sort of commitment to cash in on the glamour, the VIP treatment, the perks.
Travel writing is something you can easily do in your spare time. No experience necessary.
And you don’t even have to travel to make a go of it. After all, where you live is a destination for somebody.
So you can easily write about what there is to see and do in your hometown. And when you do that, you're pretty much guaranteed local celebrity status. That means invites to all sorts of fun stuff — like gallery openings, tourist attractions, new restaurants, and more …
This summer, we'll show you exactly how it's done.
You'll walk away with easy, proven techniques for landing no-cost trips … real-world advice for turning your travel know-how into cash … tried-and-true ways to transform your vacations into tax-deductible adventures … and more …
“35 days ago, I walked into The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop in San Francisco. Prior to that day, I'd never written a thing. Today, I have a by-line!”
— Mary Anne L..
This workshop seems like a ten-week course condensed into one.
— Johnnie M.
"This workshop teaches good, practical how-to focus. If none of us publishes anything after this, we’ll only have ourselves to blame!"
— Dee O.
Ordinary Folks, Extraordinary Successes.
This Workshop Really Works!
I've already told you about Tamara, Connie, Tim, Zenaida and Robin — all past workshop attendees who put what they learned into action and are, today, getting paid to travel. But they're hardly alone in their success.
Here's a story that'll make you green with envy. Duane and Harlene H. enjoyed an entire summer of travel … free. And all they had to do in exchange was take good notes about what they did and then make suggestions about whether they'd recommend it to others — or not.
All told, they visited 23 different dude ranches in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana over a three-month period, staying for free an average of three days at each ranch. The total value of their summer stays? About $55,000 … and they didn't pay anything. Not one cent.
What's more, they wrote an article for Steamboat Magazine, a high-end coffee-table publication based in Steamboat Springs, CO that comes out twice a year. And they were paid for their work.
And then there's Roy, who I told you about earlier. Roy already has over ten press trips booked for 2012, all over the world, and it’s not even the New Year yet. And, he’s prepared to help you do the same by helping us create a new guide: How to Earn Back Your Workshop Fee in 90 Days or Less.
Roy earns back his conference fee every two to three weeks now and gets so many offers for free trips, he has to turn most of them down. He wrote to say —
"I really am using every scrap of knowledge I picked up at the workshop in Portland, and it really does work … I'm quite amazed because I've only had one article query rejected by all the magazines I pitched … and the best part is I am enjoying it so much."
— Roy S.
You know, you can be enjoying this lifestyle too … and a lot faster than you probably imagine.
Join us for these three power-packed days, and within a handful of weeks you could be getting paid to travel, seeing your name in print, and enjoying some unbelievable perks, too …
That's because this workshop isn't filled with theoretical fluff. We tell you how, in the real world, this industry works. And then we show you — step-by-step — exactly how to navigate your way through it.
It means you can avoid the pitfalls that trip up most new travel writers. Instead, you can steer yourself directly to the by-lines you need to guarantee your future success.
Like Barbara B., for example. Barbara moved from the U.S. to Malta, a Mediterranean paradise, a few years back. She attended our Paris program and got two articles in print immediately afterwards. Not only that, but she later landed a regular column for In Touch — and she got an article published about her move from Washington to Malta in Transitions Abroad.
Eunice T., a participant on our Mexican cruise, has been so successful at publishing articles that editors now call her. She has been pursued by editors to write about her hometown in Alaska.
A writer at our workshop in Argentina sold an article about Buenos Aires apartments within a month of her return home.
A San Diego workshop participant successfully sold the same article she wrote during our program three times — and got paid for it three times, too.
And a San Francisco workshop participant got an article published in the August/September 2008 issue of California Homeschooler magazine … less than one month after the workshop.
And believe me, this is only the beginning of the heap of success stories that are piling up on my desk. People are starting to live out their dreams … and you can, too …"Classes were to the point, inclusive of our individual needs and concerns, and covered an exhaustive array of quite valuable tools and tips. I have been telling everyone who will listen what a great experience I had."
— Colleen Q.
“I must tell you what the workshop meant to me. It opened doors on my possibility list, making two of my favorite things — travel and writing — a new lifestyle for me. Since I am retired and have no baggage to haul around the world (except one suitcase and my laptop!) I am good to go … good to write!”
— Diane J.
Special Publication Expo Delivers Real Publications
Looking for Your Articles
We're so committed to connecting you with real-life opportunities … to helping you take what you learn in San Francisco and immediately turn it into a by-line and a check … that we're putting on a very special Publication Expo: A Job Fair for Freelance Travel Writers during the program for everyone who attends the workshop.
It's your chance — this one time only — to gain insider information about what more than a dozen different publications are looking for from travel writers … and to learn exactly what you need to do to pitch them your ideas.
We've been in touch with the editors at all these publications. We've interviewed them. Really, we've picked their brains. And we've found out — on your behalf — what, exactly, they're looking for in an article.
We asked about what they like … what drives them nuts … and what you can do to increase your chances of landing a by-line there.
You'll learn all of that at the Publication Expo … and more. Plus we'll have their writer's guidelines available as well as sample issues of each featured publication. In essence, you'll come away with a roadmap for getting a by-line in each one.
And our own experts will be on hand to talk about these newspapers, magazines, and online publications. And they'll share with you, too, their own hard-won insights about the smartest ways to increase the number of articles you sell and to bump up your income on every piece you write.
We hosted our very first Publication Expo five years ago, and the successes it produced were really unbelievable.
One attendee landed three by-lines — in publications we profiled there — and launched her career right then. In the first month after the workshop. And she'd never written an article before.
I asked her about her experience, and she said …
"You made it so easy. I mean, I walked around to all the tables at the Expo (drinking my glass of wine — thanks for that — very classy to have cocktails there). I picked up all this great material about each publication. And it included a sample issue of each one, so I could read those at home later and really familiarize myself with them.
"The profiles explained exactly what the editors were looking for — in the editors' own words. And so I just followed the easy directions you laid out there. I immediately landed three stories — within a month of the workshop. It was so exciting to see my name in print. And it gave me my start.
"Honestly, I feel a little like I cheated the system. I mean, aren't budding writers supposed to suffer starting out? I sure didn't. I just did what you showed us how to do. And it got me immediate success. So thanks!"
— Bonnie C.
Practical, ("You Can Do It with a Point-and-Shoot")
Lessons from a Professional Photographer, too …
In addition to the Publication Expo, we've integrated something else very special — and useful — into this program. A revealing presentation by a seasoned professional photographer.
It's true that photos help you sell your articles. And it's also true that you don't need lots of experience or expensive equipment to take the kinds of shots that can illustrate your stories beautifully.
In this important session, you'll learn some easy techniques you can put into practice immediately to take better shots every time. You'll find out how to easily transform a vacation snapshot into a photo you can sell. Plus find out how to put together an article-photo package that will have editors knocking at your door.
Of course, all of that is just a small sampling of the kind of real-world insights this program delivers …
“Many thanks for the wonderful seminar. It was most worthwhile from all aspects and we would attend another in a heartbeat. Material covered was extensive but well presented. We were impressed by our well-qualified and informed instructors.”
— Duane and Harlene H.

"Would You Like to 'Work' for Me?"
Dear Reader,
Right now, I need travel stories for three of my publications (including International Living) and several web sites. More specifically, I need some people to write these stories.
If you are interested in coming to "work" for me, you might find yourself exploring the whitewashed towns of Sicily, in the middle of the Mediterranean. Or you could visit the beaches and the wild nightlife of southern Spain. Or maybe you'd prefer to investigate a chain of tropical islands off the coast of Panama, a notorious, 19th-century pirate hideout.
In fact, International Living has published articles about each of these destinations — and I've got dozens of others in mind, places I'd like people to write about for me.
If this idea interests you, I encourage you to attend this San Francisco workshop. I assure you: The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop lives up to its name.
In fact, I've already had the great pleasure of paying for and publishing articles written by attendees of past workshops.
We have a tremendous need for well-written travel articles, so if you are interested in the lifestyle this kind of work offers, I urge you to register now.
This is your chance to make that dream a reality. I encourage you to attend.
Sincerely,
Jackie Flynn, Publisher, International Living
- Make writing easy. Learn how to get information to come right to you — you'll never be at a loss for a story idea or the meaty content that will make writing a breeze.
- Get a simple technique for tripling your travel writing income … with almost no additional work.
- Learn why writing about where you live can be so much fun — and such an important first step to take — and how it can easily lead to great paying assignments and amazing perks all over the world.
- Find out the one big secret you never learned writing “What I did last summer” essays in school. This critical idea separates adequate writers from exceptional ones, and travel editors can tell immediately if you’re in-the-know.
- Stretch your vacation dollars — save hundreds of dollars a night — when you defray your travel costs with deeply discounted "press rates" at swank hotels around the world. Find out how it's done — what to say and what not to say — and what you can do to increase the chances that next time you'll be asked back for free.
- Learn the delicate art of arranging a complimentary trip — a seasoned travel writer spills her secrets (including sample letters you can copy) and tells you exactly what to say and who to say it to.
"Best workshop I've attended in many, many years — focused, practical tools and templates for successful travel writing and the nuts and bolts of how to get published."
— Nadia B.

Now, this program is still several months away. But we're already busy sending out speaker invitations to editors at a host of publications. These are people who hire writers just like you and who are always in the market for stories they can pay for to fill up their pages.
In July, these "guest editors" will talk to you about their own particular niches and how to guarantee you can break in with ease. For instance, you'll hear about food writing — how to write about restaurants, what to make sure you include in your reviews, tricks for evaluating cafes, bars, and restaurants, and more …
And we'll be hosting "pitch-fests" with these editors, sessions where you can throw out article ideas and they'll respond to them — tell you why one will work and another won't — and I guarantee, you'll learn more valuable lessons here than you can imagine.
There's just nothing quite like hearing what makes a "printable" article right from the expert who could print it.
Plus, too, we're inviting a wide variety of freelance writers who will share with you the lessons they've learned over the years and the secrets they know to apply every time they sit down to write.
This is the kind of stuff it would take you years to figure out on your own. But our speakers will spare you the trouble, frustration, and time … and just cut to the chase.
That way you're sure to be using your time and energies wisely. There's no more efficient — or fun — way to learn the ropes. And there’s no other way to guarantee that you’re up-and-running quickly … enjoying the perks of a writer's life.
“The positive reinforcement was invaluable. I appreciated the time all of you took to review my work and give me useful feedback. The printed material is helpful and will be a good resource. The small group sessions were good opportunities to gain insight on our work. On a personal note, I was glad I had completed your written course prior to taking this workshop. It made quite a difference for me.”
— Wendy V.
We'll Be Based at the Parc 55 Hotel,
in the Heart of Downtown San Francisco
I assure you: this program would prove a worthwhile summer excursion even if we were hosting it in the backyard of my house next to the swing set..
Lucky for you, though, we're not. As I mentioned above, San Francisco is a vibrant, invigorating city … and we'll be right in the thick of things…
We'll be based at the boutique, four-diamond Parc 55 Hotel, right next to the renowned Union Square shopping area and the theater district. We'll be just a few blocks from the Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Gardens, where you can stroll and relax among fountains, waterfalls, sculptures, and blossoming beds.
The rooms in this hotel are spacious, and the views out over the city will take your breath away.
We've also arranged for a discounted room rate for workshop participants (just $149 per night plus tax). But please mark your calendar: that rate is only guaranteed through June 27. So if you'll be joining us for this program in July, you'll want to reserve your room early. I've put the contact details for the hotel below.)
We’ll Shave at Least Three Years Off Your Learning Curve
in Just Three Days … and You’ll Walk Away
with the Skills You Need to Earn Your First Check
in Just Days After Completing this Workshop
You know, there are other "writing workshops" out there. But I want to be clear — this program is different than anything else you'll find. It's not the kind of thing where you just hear from some writers who share their stories to inspire you.
We do that, too, mind you. I mean, I guarantee you'll come away invigorated and ready to really jump into travel writing. But we take things a few steps further. We hand you a roadmap you can follow to really make it happen.
Our experts will actually give you a success plan you can work through — day-by-day — so you can have an article to an editor within two weeks of going home. We're all about action.
We'll introduce you to a system that, when coupled with a bit of persistence, is so powerful, our past workshop attendees are getting their work published like there’s no tomorrow.
The information you'll gain at this workshop could, quite literally, change your life — it has already for so many of our past attendees who, today, are working travel writers.
Here’s what our workshop architect, Jennifer Stevens, has to say about the program:
“The idea is that for these three days, you immediately apply what you learn. In my view, it's not really useful to just sit back and scribble notes on a pad of paper. Yet that's what you typically do in seminars.
“What IS useful, on the other hand, is to roll up your sleeves, lean forward, and really put what the speakers are showing you into practice. And that's what we do. And we don't leave you hunched over, staring at a blank piece of paper and struggling with what to say or how to say it …
“ … we provide step-by-step instruction on exactly what you need to do to put an article together. Follow these formulas, and you’ll always know what to put first and what to write next.
"And then, of course, we show you what to do after that, how — and where — to sell this article you've just written.”
Jennifer Stevens

and architect of The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop
Plus, what’s great is that this program comes with an affordable price tag. You might reasonably expect this workshop to cost two or three thousand dollars. And it would be worth every penny. You'd recoup it quickly enough, after all.
But it won't cost you anywhere near that.

— Laura A.
Jen has an excellent grasp of what makes a good writer. I have done creative writing workshops at Humber College, Ontario, but her points were better and more concrete than anything I did there. Great points!!!
— Frances B.
"You have unleashed an incredible source of energy within me … I travel a lot and I have to write about stuff anyway — mostly technology — but now I look at it differently. I have always loved to travel (Army brat) and will always continue to do so, but now I can honor and commemorate my experiences by writing about them.
"It deepens the connection I make with people and my memories of them and that means a great deal to me — and I enjoy writing about it immensely! That would be true even if no one but me ever read these things — but I must say that the feedback I have received from friends and colleagues with whom I have shared my articles has been very gratifying".
— Bob S.
The Travel Writing Workshop is an excellent balance of theory and practice. The presenters are very knowledgeable and gave us lots of practical advice. It’s also a lot of fun!
— Anne M.
Talking with others helped me gain confidence that I would not have had if I had just done the home-study course.
— Linda W.
