Age: 57

What is your current occupation?
recently downsized from a data entry job

What are you studying at AWAI (travel writing, photography, import/export, or all three)?
travel writing and photography

What was your first successful article or photo about and where did it appear?
My first successful photo and article were in my local newspaper, The News-Press in Santa Barbara. They had a section in their weekly travel section called "Where I've Been" and I submitted photos and a small article about my trip to Romania.

What are you working on now?
I have recently seen the completion of a great project for VisualTravelTours.com featuring the Santa Barbara Waterfront. The tour can be downloaded to any hand held communication device and played back before, during or after a visit to the destination. My text and photos were produced into several formats and can be downloaded as text and photos only to be printed out, a quiet guide for your hand held with just text and photos, or as a video format with voice narration. All formats can also be purchased on a CD together.

What has been your proudest writing, photography, or import/export moment?
My proudest effort so far has been the completion of the visual travel tour. It was great because I could use both my writing and photography skills together - two of my passions.

Please give us an example of how your life has changed since becoming a travel writer, photographer, or import-exporter.
I have become more confident in myself as a photographer and travel writer since encountering AWAI instruction. I was able to put the knowledge to use immediately and see good results. I was confident to represent myself as a professional. It's amazing what doors that opens up.

What success tip would you like to share with your fellow AWAI members?
Keep doing what you love. I try to take my camera almost everywhere I go. You never know what you might come across. A few times I missed great photo opportunities because I didn't have it with me. In those instances, I just have to drink in the moment and enjoy it for what it is. I feel I lost the ability to share it with others. Photos help a lot when I travel even though I keep a journal. I can't possibly write everything down so the photos help fill in the gaps. It's especially helpful when there is a sign with information I can photograph for reference later.

When did you realize you were living the writer’s or photographer’s life?
When I actually got paid for doing what I love.
