What is your current occupation?
Primarily freelance feature writer & photographer of The Sunday Times of Malta, the Sunday Monthly Supplement and Circle Magazine

What are you studying at AWAI (travel writing, photography, import/export, or all three)?
I started with travel writing but I currently plan to continue my study of photography...I publish a lot but they're not first-rate pix.

What was your first successful article or photo about and where did it appear?
First commercial article & photos in Transitions Abroad about exploring Malta, first columns about life in Malta for In Touch Magazine. Both in 2003.
Barbara Bode

What are you working on now?
Correlation between Gozitan & Maltese temples on one side of the Atlantic and Mayan & Aztec temples on the other. Also compiling a book of my best articles and photographs about Gozo -- Malta's sister island. Working title: Twelve Kitties and a Bishop. I've spent a year covering the new Bishop of Gozo and two years with a farm garden full of Gozitan cats. Never had a Bishop or a pet before.

What has been your proudest writing, photography, or import/export moment?
Being selected by Bishop Grech, the new Bishop of Gozo, to be the first journalist allowed to interview & photograph him and to cover his travels to New York City and Washington DC to bless the Oratory of Our Lady of Ta'Pinu at the National Shrine in Washington DC. By the way, I'm not Catholic, nor am I of Maltese or Gozitan descent. I'm on Gozo thanks to enticing writing of Steenie Harvey for International Living.

Please give us an example of how your life has changed since becoming a travel writer, photographer, or import-exporter.
What a great way to meet your neighbors and learn about the country you live in! Now when I walk across my village square, grand fathers come racing after me to find out when I'll put the photos of their grandchildren in the paper. Owners of horses and other animals want copies of my photos from the Annual Blessing of the Animals and the little boys who carried a 10 day old piglet for the Blessing to restore the tradition of St. Anthony, the Abbott, have honored me in their special piglet section of the Parish Cantre of Ghajnsielem,

What success tip would you like to share with your fellow AWAI members?
Go for it! I actually sent a couple of articles into The Sunday Times when I saw a small block on the front page asking if anyone had anything to submit about Food or Drink for their Monthly Supplement. I sent in a story about Gozitan Viagra -- red wine and tiny chile peppers -- and locally grown mushrooms...not quite magic but, oh well. The Editor wrote back and asked if I'd write for her regularly. That's how my writing experience for The Sunday Times of Malta all began.

When did you realize you were living the writer’s or photographer’s life?
When I couldn't do anything else because I had events to cover or deadlines to meet. It's certainly restricted my social life but it's still a lot of fun.
