| What are you studying at AWAI (travel writing,
photography, import/export, or all three)? |
| Travel Writing & Photography |
| |
| What was your first successful article or photo about
and where did it appear? |
| My first successful travel article was about a recent trip to Abu Simbel, Egypt. It appeared in the Orlando Sentinel along with a photograph that I took of the temple. |
|
|
| |
| What are you working on now? |
| I am working on an article about a "misadventure" that turned out good while visiting Maui. |
| |
| What has been your proudest writing, photography, or
import/export moment? |
| Having my first attempt at travel writing accepted and published in my hometown newspaper, The Orlando Sentinel. Several weeks later I received a call from the editor saying that someone read my piece and just wanted to talk to me about my trip. |
| |
| Please give us an example of how your life has
changed since becoming a travel writer, photographer, or
import-exporter. |
| I actually changed careers so that I could create a lifestyle that would give me the freedom to devote to my travel writing and photography. I left the corporate world and started up a very lucrative home-based business that will now allow me the personal freedom. |
| |
| What success tip would you like to share with your
fellow AWAI members? |
| If submitting an article, read several past editions or publications so that you know exactly what the style of writing is that they publish. I would also try to submit articles or photographs that come at the subject matter from a different angle. In my example of Egypt, everyone has seen the pyramids but far fewer are familiar with the Temples of Abu Simbel. In fact, because of the way the Orlando Sentinel works, you have to submit photos separately from the email transcript. The editor held off publishing my article until she could actually find my photo because she was intrigued by what I wrote in describing the temples. |

| When did you realize you were living the writer’s or
photographer’s life? |
| Not until this question was asked, actually. |
